For the first time ever, IWC's Portuguese Perpetual Calendar features a countdown display that can be used to read off the exact number of days remaining until the next full moon. For as long as anyone can remember, the full moon has been steeped in mystery and legend. Many people believe it has an influence on them, while in many cultures special festivals are celebrated on nights with a full moon. It is in any case undisputed that the moon and its gravitational pull determine the ebb and flow of the tides and thus have an influence on the earth and our own lives. The moon in the hemisphere lunar display on the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar measures just five millimetres in diameter about 700 million times less than in reality. Nevertheless, its representation of the course of the moon deviates by just twelve seconds from the actual time taken in each lunar period. The phases of the moon are displayed as mirror reflections for both the northern and southern hemispheres. The hour indices are painstakingly applique to the black dial.
